Hi,
My name is Miles. I'm 20 years old and about to graduate from university at Oxford Brookes where I study Computer Science and Business, which was more fun than it sounds...sometimes. I am so proud to have almost completed this achievement as I will be the first in my family to receive a degree although my sister is way smarter and will outshine all my academic achievements eventually. However the impending job hunt and parental pressure to secure a nice graduate job, commuting to London every morning just to afford enough to rent a shared apartment in an 'ok' area with thousands of other miserable people wishing they were in Koh Samui sipping Mai Tai's and listening to MF Doom (or is that just me) . I have worked very hard over the past few years bartending to save money and with university about to finish, this is one of the best opportunities in my life I will get to leave home for an extended period of time and explore the world
My plan is to work in the UK over the Summer, preferably an internship in a startup or VC firm as I just want to surround myself with creative minds and I want to be around for my Mum's 50th birthday in November. This will hopefully give me some good experience and test out whether a career in technology is something I really want to pursue.
However after that the plan is to hit South-East Asia; Thailand, Cambodia, Bali & Vietnam are the ones that most appeal to me and any travel advice to these areas is always appreciated. I am drawn in by the seemingly carefree attitude, low prices and the natural beauty of the places to visit there as well as the weather obviously. Whilst out there I want to take some filming equipment to work on a business idea of mine that I think will be really cool and possibly lead to long-term travel for me, which would be THE dream but I don't want to go into too much detail just yet.
From there I will fly onto Melbourne, Australia where I will have a working visa, a schoolfriend in the area with a job hookup and continue to work on my filming project on the side. I plan to stay here for a few months depending on how much I like it and how much I can save, however I don't plan to stay more than 6 months max that you can stay in one job but with my working visa I will be able to stay in the country for up to 12 months.
Depending on my money situation at this point, I will most likely fly onto Hawaii, because of surfing, Lilo & Stitch and it's around £100 from Australia and £1000 from the UK. I would love to explore Hawaii for a short time, although it will probably be hard to find a job so I won't stay long before moving onto LA. This will be my final destination on this trip where I will try and hangout with a schoolfriend who will be studying in UCLA next year. Hopefully this will save some money and throughout I'm hoping the filming idea will start generating some income, LA will be great to visit for me and as a nerdy technology graduate I will probably make time to visit San Francisco when I'm there.
This blog will start now at the preparation for this journey, will follow my thoughts, planning, documents, equipment, luggage, transport etc. as well as other things that are particularly interesting to me. This includes space, music, science, nature, technology, food, spirituality, art, ancient history, psychoactive drugs and Shamanism.
